In Person We Must Present PHYSICAL ID! But Why Is That Important?

At the bar or bank, we're asked to present physical ID, not a photo or a digital wallet. The reason why is a hint about safety and privacy online.

A handwritten sign reading: Everyone must present physical ID! Phone images not accepted. And no, gray hair, bald spots, wrinkles, etc. are not valid proof of age. And no, you are not old enough to be our parents.

At the bar or bank, we're asked to present physical ID, not a photo or a digital wallet. The reason why is a hint about safety and privacy online.

In today's word, it seems we're asked more about identity online than in the real word. The fact is: Digital ID is just data, and data that is indistinguishable from a copy of that data. Online, limitless copies that can be made without detection, forever. This is a risk to our safety and our privacy, it harms the platforms we rely on everyday.

Physical ID Is Connected

Real ID has context and singularity. It’s yours because you carry it. Online? The very same ID that you use in the real world changes. It's no longer physical at all. It's just Data and this creates an illusion of identity confidence that simply isn't there.

You see, your ID has never violated privacy when you use it at the Bank. It never was subject being copied at a Bar. It was safe. Secure. Reliant.

When you take this very same ID card online? Suddenly, it's easy to fake and cheap to steal. This means that it is no longer a reliant indicator of identity. In fact? In the online world, copies of data can be made forever and once you surrender privacy, that protection is gone. What happened?

Physical Is Singular

When you remove an ID card from your pocket, it is unique. Sure, you can submit a fake ID, most of us have done this when we were young. It works to pass the security gate...sometimes. But it's risky and expensive and you can get caught using it.

You cannot walk into a bank and be 500 people at once. Your ID cannot have limitless duplicates that are indistinguishable from the original. Your personal details cannot be recorded for eternity.

Online? All of those risks are present and the fact copies of this data can be used to pass the very same gate and blame crimes on you. This makes surrender of private documents online, dangerous and invasive.

Does Identity Emerge From A Card?

Nobody believes their identity emerges from a card issued at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Nobody thinks their passport IS their body.

These documents represent a moment in time, when a person of known integrity saw you in person and decided your papers were in order.

Ironically, your driving license was created from your digital account data. It was printed out for when the internet is NOT available. We've been using it wrong this whole time!

You Already Have Your Digital Self

You already have a digital identity. It's the only thing we humans can do in the online world.

Your digital self is your posts, comments and activity. It's your GitHub account where code is checked into other people's repositories. It's your LinkedIn with your followers, it's your Blog and all your posts. Your digital self is literally defined as the links and profiles others already know you by.

Instead of a single piece of physical ID, we can confirm and connect a variety of digital counterparts. These can be public properties; things we can and want others to know. Locking these down as your property, protects them —but also is a benefit. Now you control how others view and share your identity. Transparency is extending a had of good faith and accountability with others who share the expectation of meeting other good people.
